Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Political thuggery, involving the use of violence and intimidation to influence electoral outcomes, has been a persistent issue in Nigerian elections, especially in regions like Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State. This study examines the impact of political thuggery on voter freedom and electoral integrity in Zaria, analyzing how thugs are used to intimidate voters, disrupt campaigns, and influence election results (Usman & Sulaiman, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political thuggery undermines the democratic process by preventing free and fair elections, with voters often coerced or threatened into abstaining from voting or supporting particular candidates. This study seeks to assess the extent of political thuggery in Zaria Local Government and its effects on voter freedom and the integrity of local elections.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how political thuggery impacts democratic processes in Zaria Local Government. It will provide insights into the challenges of ensuring voter freedom and the necessary steps to combat violence and intimidation during elections.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on political thuggery in Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State, during local elections. Limitations include challenges in obtaining data from affected voters and political actors, as well as the potential underreporting of incidents due to fear of retaliation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
